Christmas Markets to explore during your stay
Colmar
In Colmar, there isn’t just one but six Christmas markets, scattered throughout the historic center.
Each has its own unique character: arts and crafts at the Koïfhus, local products at Place Jeanne-d’Arc, decorations near the Dominican Church, and a family-friendly atmosphere in Little Venice.
Little Venice is especially worth a visit for families. Its market is designed with children in mind, featuring a carousel, a nativity scene, and Santa’s giant mailbox.
Colmar thus reveals itself to be a true Christmas journey: you move from one square and one atmosphere to the next as you wander through the historic heart of the city.
November 24 through December 29.
Eguisheim A Christmas Focused on Traditions
In Eguisheim, the atmosphere is different. The market deliberately opts for a more intimate setting, featuring about thirty artisans and designers.
The village places special emphasis on Alsatian customs and traditions, and its market has been awarded the “Villes et Villages de Noël” designation, which highlights its authenticity and heritage.
But Eguisheim isn’t just about the chalets: events are organized during Advent, including musical processions, concerts, shows, treasure hunts, themed tours, and the traditional night watchman’s rounds.
This makes it a particularly interesting stop for those who want to experience Alsatian Christmas traditions beyond just the market.
From November 27 to December 23, and then from December 27 to 30.
Kaysersberg The Artisans’ Gathering
Kaysersberg stands out above all for its decision to place craftsmanship at the heart of its Christmas market.
About thirty chalets are set up in the Arsenal courtyard and behind the Sainte-Croix Church. The exhibitors are selected for the quality and originality of their handcrafted creations.
Unlike many other Alsatian markets that are open daily, the Kaysersberg craft market is mainly open on Advent weekends. This gives it a unique character and makes it an outing worth planning in advance during your stay.
The city is also worth a visit at dusk, when the residents’ decorations and the city’s lights highlight its historic center.
Riquewihr Christmas in the Heart of the Wine Route
For Riquewihr, I’d take a different approach: heritage and the Wine Route.
Rather than focusing solely on its market, the idea would be to encourage vacationers to take advantage of their trip to explore the village, its heritage, and the surrounding area.
Riquewihr can thus become a stop on a day trip dedicated to the villages along the Wine Route, for example by combining it with a visit to Kaysersberg. This way, we’re promoting a full day of exploration rather than just another market.
From November 26 to December 29.
Mulhouse A Christmas in All Its Glory
Mulhouse has a tradition that other markets in the region don’t have: the Christmas Fabric Market.
Every year since 1998, a new textile pattern has been created especially for the holidays. This fabric is used to decorate the chalets and various elements throughout the city center, paying homage to Mulhouse’s rich textile heritage.
So this is the unique feature you should highlight on your website: when visitors come to Mulhouse, they discover a Christmas celebration that is directly linked to the city’s history.
And for vacationers staying at Les Castors, it’s also a particularly appealing destination because of its proximity to the campground.
November 25 through December 27.
Strasbourg The Origins of the Alsatian Christmas Market
Strasbourg deserves a more history-focused presentation.
Its famous Christkindelsmärik dates back to 1570, making it one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe. Today, it is set up primarily on Place Broglie, while the festivities extend to various locations throughout the city center.
Another must-see: the Grand Sapin on Place Kléber, standing about thirty meters tall, which has become one of the major symbols of “Strasbourg, Capital of Christmas.”
Strasbourg is therefore the top destination for those who wish to discover the history and richness of Alsatian Christmas traditions.
From November 26 to December 24.
A vacation Several Ways to Celebrate Christmas
That’s precisely what makes a trip to Alsace so special at this time of year: no two markets are alike.
In Colmar, you can hop from one market to the next. In Eguisheim, you’ll experience the traditions of an Alsatian village. Kaysersberg showcases local artisans. Riquewihr lets you experience Christmas along the Wine Route. Mulhouse tells the story of its textile heritage through its “Étoffe de Noël,” while Strasbourg immerses visitors in centuries of traditions.
When you stay at Camping Les Castors, you can plan your itinerary however you like and discover a new aspect of Christmas in Alsace every day.
And after the Christmas markets…
After a day spent exploring the Christmas markets and villages of Alsace, return to the comfort of your accommodations at Camping Les Castors.
For a relaxing getaway, enjoy our Container Spa & Sauna for 2 people or our Spa Cottages for 4 to 6 people, each equipped with a private spa. It’s the perfect way to warm up after a winter day in Alsace.
And if you’d like to fully immerse yourself in the Alsatian atmosphere, choose one of our Alsatian chalets for 4, 6, or 8 people. With their architecture inspired by the region’s traditional homes, they’ll let you fully enjoy the Alsatian atmosphere, even once you’re back at the campground.
